“Book it!”
That was what Tony said every time he was asked if he could squeeze another meeting in his already very tight schedule.
So it was that Tony spoke tirelessly, non-stop, at 35 sessions in 17 days in Singapore, Taiping, Penang and the Klang Valley.
We slotted in just one day for him to rest from the heat and humidity and tried to give him, whenever possible, some short breaks between talks, only to learn that he frequently went off by himself to share the gospel with people on the street, security guards, hotel musicians, etc., around where he stayed. Come to think of it, this really should not be a surprise as Tony believed passionately in street pastoring.
Not only did he have back-to-back meetings, but there were days with the first session starting as early as 7.35am. In fact, his first full day in Singapore, the day after he touched down at Changi, had him speaking to 1,500 students and teachers of ACS (Barker) from 7.35 – 8.15am. Then it was off to the Singapore prison from 10.30am to 12noon, followed by two sessions at the Reformative Training Centre from 1 – 4.30pm. He only finished that day past 10pm at the Yio Chu Kang Chapel.
He shared his testimony with the old and young, believers and non-believers, those behind physical prison bars and those emotionally and spiritually imprisoned, in churches, at schools, colleges, prisons and reformative centres.
All in all, approximately 17,000 people in Malaysia and Singapore were exposed to Tony’s remarkable testimony and were truly touched by Tony’s straight-talking message of how God transformed his life and why this God of second (and third and fourth and fifth…) chances is truly his Super Hero.
We reckoned more than 300 people responded to the gospel and re-dedicated their lives to Jesus and many were challenged to release the handbrake on the Great Commission to “go and make disciples of all nations”. Many Christians have begun to realise that “Evangelism” is simply a proclamation of the good news, i.e. just telling or sharing about Jesus Christ.
We truly thank God for bringing Tony Anthony to our shores this Easter season. May God so transform our lives just as He did Tony’s so that we will – like Tony – declare that we’d “rather be dead than not to share the gospel”.
